This beautiful and dramatic photo of Maarup Church was taken by photographer Hans Nielsen, who lives in Kraghede near Tylstrup - North Jutland.
In many ways, the fate of Maarup Church has long been sealed. The church's location by the turbulent North Sea has for centuries painted a gloomy picture of what would become of the church. But important bodies took up the fight against the ravages of the sea over a long period of time and have worked to change the fate of Maarup Church. However, there has been great disagreement about what fate the church should actually have.
It had long been intended that the church, which was Lønstrup's landmark, should be rebuilt further inland, as has been done before with farms and churches whose foothold was in danger of being taken away by the North Sea.
Therefore, the small church from the 13th century was carefully dismantled and stored at the Hjørring Emergency Response Center. But when they gave up on rebuilding it, the parts were taken over by a construction company in 2015, who crushed them into gravel, and it ended up as road fill.
